Gift Box Sizes: Matching the Box to the Product

05/08/2026

The most common gift box mistake isn’t the wrong color or print — it’s the wrong fit. A box that’s too large lets the product shift and get damaged in transit; a box that’s too small crushes ribbon, tissue, or a gift card insert. Getting the size right starts with the product’s own dimensions plus a consistent buffer.

As a general rule, add half an inch to an inch of clearance around a rigid product for tissue or foam, and up to two inches for a bundled gift set with multiple items that need to sit apart from each other.

When in doubt, send us the product

If you’re unsure which dimensions to specify, send us the product’s measurements (or the product itself) with your quote request and we’ll recommend a size and style — this is one of the most common things our mockup team helps with before production ever starts.

Product type Recommended style Typical interior clearance
Apparel (folded) Two-piece lid box 0.5–1 in
Jewelry / small accessories Drawer-style slide box Fitted insert, minimal clearance
Bundled gift set (3–5 items) Rigid magnetic box 1–2 in
Subscription box contents Collapsible kraft box 0.5–1.5 in
Key takeawaySize the box to the product plus a small clearance buffer, and let us confirm fit before you commit to a production run.
